EqualWeb is committed to improving digital accessibility, ensuring that individuals with disabilities can easily access and interact with online content. As part of this commitment, EqualWeb has worked to enhance the browsing experience for all users, ensuring compliance with widely recognized accessibility standards. To support this mission, the NEEDOH website has undergone a thorough review and remediation process, carried out by experienced software developers and accessibility professionals. This review aimed to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) version 2.1 at the AA conformance level, a widely acknowledged international standard for accessible web design.

The WCAG 2.1 AA guidelines provide detailed instructions to help make digital content more accessible for users, including those who rely on assistive technologies or alternate means of interaction. These guidelines address critical areas such as content structure, navigation, presentation, and overall user interaction. By implementing these standards, the NEEDOH website now offers improved support for individuals with various disabilities, such as those who are blind or have low vision, those who are deaf or hard of hearing, individuals with cognitive or learning disabilities, and those with limited mobility or speech impairments. This alignment also enhances the user experience for the general population, making the site easier and more intuitive to navigate.

In achieving these accessibility improvements, EqualWeb employed both automated tools and manual evaluations from skilled developers and accessibility experts. A comprehensive review and adjustment process was undertaken to ensure accessibility across both existing and newly added content. The process included detailed accessibility audits, functional testing, and the correction of any identified barriers. Technical improvements included modifications to JavaScript and CSS, as well as enhancements to ensure compatibility with assistive technologies like screen readers, including NVDA and JAWS.

A major goal of the accessibility updates was to ensure compatibility across various browsers and operating systems. The NEEDOH website has been optimized for major browsers, including Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera, and Safari, as well as for macOS’s VoiceOver feature. Accessibility support for screen readers has been carefully addressed for both Windows and Mac users, ensuring a consistent and reliable experience across different devices and software.

Several features have been introduced to cater to diverse user needs. Full keyboard navigation is now supported, allowing users who cannot use a mouse to navigate the site easily. Visual disturbances, such as flashing or blinking elements, have been minimized or removed. The website also includes descriptive text for images, and users can adjust the font size, spacing, and alignment to improve readability. Additional font options are available, and the color contrast can be adjusted to enable users to switch between light and dark modes, or customize their color scheme to suit their needs, including a monochrome mode for those with color vision deficiencies.

Other enhancements include the ability to enlarge the cursor and change its color for better visibility, zoom content up to 200%, and highlight important elements like links and headings to make it easier for users to navigate. Image descriptions, tooltips, and text emphasis features have been added to help users understand the content displayed on the website. Simplified content views are also available to ensure better clarity, and alternative input methods are supported to accommodate different text-entry needs.

From a technical perspective, the accessibility improvements on the NEEDOH website rely on standard web technologies like HTML, WAI-ARIA, CSS, and JavaScript. These technologies ensure that the website complies with accessibility standards while maintaining compatibility with modern browsers and assistive devices.
